How does scoring work in Tetris?
Tetris scoring is built to reward ambition. The same forty lines can earn wildly different totals depending on how cleverly you clear them.
Below you will find the short version first, then a fuller walkthrough with clear Tetris examples, a few closely related questions, and a link to try it yourself. Everything here is free to play right in your browser.
Points per line clear
The base rewards climb steeply: a single is worth about 100, a double 300, a triple 500, and a Tetris 800. Clearing four lines at once therefore beats four separate singles by a wide margin. A well-timed T-spin can pay even more than a Tetris, which is why advanced players hunt for spin setups.
Multipliers: level, back-to-back, combo
Every base value is multiplied by your level, so the same Tetris is worth far more at level fifteen than at level one. On top of that, chaining difficult clears triggers a back-to-back bonus, and consecutive clears build a combo bonus. Stack all three effects and a single move can post an enormous number.
Drop bonuses
You also earn small amounts for moving pieces down yourself: soft dropping adds a point per cell, and hard dropping adds two per cell. It is minor next to line clears, but it rewards decisive play. Your best totals land on the leaderboard, where efficient scoring stands out.

What is a Tetris clear?
A Tetris, capital T, is the move where you clear four rows in a single drop. You do it by keeping one column empty, stacking the other nine rows nine cells wide, and then dropping a vertical I piece into the gap. It is the highest-scoring standard clear in the game, which is why the whole game is named after it.
What is back-to-back in Tetris?
Back-to-back, often shortened to B2B, is a bonus for performing difficult line clears one after another without an ordinary clear in between. Tetrises and T-spins count as difficult; a plain single, double, or triple breaks the chain. Each qualifying clear during a back-to-back streak earns roughly fifty percent extra points.
What is Ultra mode in Tetris?
Ultra is a fixed-time score attack, usually two or three minutes long. Your only goal is to pile up as many points as possible before the timer hits zero, which means chasing high-value clears like Tetrises, T-spins, and combos rather than just surviving. When the clock stops, your score is your result.
